Without Variation Or Shadow of Turning

Memory Verse: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning" (Jms.1:17,NKJV)

Scripture Reading: Rev.1

How would you describe God?

Of the many options, James used three key words to describe His nature: no "variation," "shadow," and "turning." All three of the Greek words are used here for the only time in the Bible. James used these important words to help us understand the fact is that there is no variation with God. As He told Malachi, "I am the Lord, I do not change" (Mal.3:6).

With God, there is no "shadow of turning." Thinking about shadows, we realize that they change with the changing angle of the sun or the way in which people move. In fact, shadows never remain constant, but change from moment-to-moment.

But God is completely different! There is no "shadow of turning" or variation with Him. People in the world may change their minds or fail to keep their promises. They may seem loyal one minute only to abandon us moments later. For many reasons, they may disappoint us, ignore us, reject us, or bother us. We can go through changing circumstances. We might have needs that seem overwhelming.

But, in the midst of every situation, we can count on God.

What challenges are you facing today? What needs do you have? In every situation, remember that you can depend on God! His Word is sure, His personality and character is constant, and He keeps His promises. Other people may disappoint you, but God never fails, and He always is present with you. He does not waver or alter His course, decisions, perspective, or nature.

But, best of all, He loves you- just as you are! He longs to take away your burdens and meet your needs. And He delights to fill your life with peace, joy, and love. He is waiting to hear from you right now.

Ponder Point: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Action Point: Trust God.

Prayer Point: Father, I thank You because I have a Father in You. Thank You that You do not change and because You do not change, I can trust You. I am confident in Your word. Therefore, I come just as I am. Amen.
